Shark Castle Trailer

Watch the trailer for Shark Castle here:

Shark Castle Trailer

The trailer shows a glimpse of the gameplay and story from the first few levels, as well as some hints of things to come.

As was the case last month, the first act of the game is mostly complete. I have been adjusting the first few levels to emphasize Finlay’s connection to his pet goldfish, which can also be seen in the trailer.

Recent Updates

  • Story and gameplay updates to first few levels
  • Level design, gameplay, and background¬†art for various scenes
  • Extra animations for Finlay and his pets, and Damian and his minions
  • Trailer editing
  • New water material variants, including a toxic version

To-Do List

  • Bug-fixing
  • UI improvements to make pipe navigation more clear (highlight relevant objects, etc.)
  • Level design, gameplay, and background art for garden and underwater levels
  • Coding improvements for underwater navigation

Shark Castle Update – June 2019

At this point, the first section of the game is still in progress. Recent updates include:

  • New quest system
  • Fleshed out gameplay and narrative elements for early levels
  • Fleshed out quests and rewards from Elsa and Grimhook (the two main NPCs in the game)
  • Tweaks to the level design and UI

I am currently working on a prologue sequence is only partially complete, and there are some gameplay sequences and art assets that need to be finished before the first ‘act’ of the game’s story is complete.

To-do list:

  • Prologue cinematic: will show Damian, Finlay’s enemy, coming to power
  • Level design and gameplay for Elsa’s den and garden
  • Level design and gameplay for underwater caves
  • Coding improvements for underwater navigation
  • Background art for cinematic and den, garden, and underwater levels

The story and gameplay are shaping up quite well. While they are still open to change, the game feels fairly well mapped out at this point. Once the first act is complete, a lot of the work for act 2 will already be complete, since levels that were originally created for act 1 were shifted around in the story.

Expect to see new environment art in the next update!

Shark Castle Update – February 2019

Things are coming together with Shark Castle – an adventure game about a shark on a quest to save his castle from falling into disrepair. It features atmospheric 3d graphics and casual 2D side scrolling gameplay. The player encounters toxic pipes in need of cleaning, minions to avoid and/or fight, and neighbours that help in exchange for completing quests.

Some things I’ve been working on:

-working with Geoff Moore on the music

-combat modifications

-background art: started using projected backgrounds as textures on planes, which allows unique and complex backgrounds without using too many resources

-custom shaders using the Amplify Shader Editor, including custom functions that are shared between shaders (modularity applied to shader writing, which is neat)

-additional levels: most gameplay and art integrated for the first third of the game

-playtesting for bugs and general impressions

At this point, the core gameplay is in place and the structure for the most of the game has been planned out, but may still be modified. I’m looking forward to sharing more as I get closer to completing the first third of the game!
